Jean Jacques Rousseau and the State of Nature
Переглядів 88921 годину тому
Hobbes and Rousseau are often put against each other for their views on what life would look like for humans in the state of nature. For Rousseau, Hobbes is looking at the state of nature through a biased societal lens, a society that has things like property, honor, success, and various goods. A human in the state of nature is blissfully ignorant of these things and is concerned only with the ...
Lev Shestov: Philosophize with a Grenade
Переглядів 1 тис.14 днів тому
Lev Shestov was a Russian existentialist philosophy working in the late 19th to early 20th century. He was very interested in the idea of freedom and creativity, wanting to see individuals have the freedom to construct and change their worldviews. However, philosophical systems that claim to be absolute and objective would get in the way of one's creativity. Logic and reason would restrain one'...
The Knight of Faith: Do You Have What it Takes? | Soren Kierkegaard
Переглядів 1,1 тис.21 день тому
Kierkegaard discusses his concept of the Knight of Faith in his work, Fear and Trembling. In it, faith is not just something you immediately stumble upon, but rather, it is arrived at through a series of necessary movements. To be a true knight of faith, one must first become a knight of resignation. At this stage, one renounces the finite material world to concentrate on the spiritual and the ...
The Art of War vs The Prince: Which is Better?
Переглядів 77421 день тому
You'll find a plethora of videos out there applying both The Art of War and The Prince to today's world for self-improvement purposes. This video was actually inspired by a clip from The Sopranos where Tony Soprano himself compares these two works and how they play into his life. Therefore, I've decided to compare these two philosophical texts to determine which is better for modern everyday pe...
5 TIPS: The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli
Переглядів 1,1 тис.28 днів тому
Many books from the world of philosophy have found popularity within the world of self-improvement. One of those books is The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli. Culturally, we use the term "machiavellian" to describe someone who's manipulative, and when reading the actual text, we do see instances where Machiavelli advocates for less than moral means to achieve some end. Debatably, most if not all ...
Philipp Mainländer | The Most Depressing Philosopher
Переглядів 2,4 тис.Місяць тому
Philipp Mainlander has gained an internet following by being known as one of the most pessimistic philosophers. With the recent release of the first physical english translation of his work, The Philosophy of Redemption, us english readers can finally confirm this. Perhaps the most pessimistic of his ideas is his will to death. You may be familiar with the will to life, an idea from Schopenhaue...
Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals [SUMMARY] by Immanuel Kant
Переглядів 843Місяць тому
This video stitches together my last three videos on Kant's Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals. Please note that this summarizes the preface, section one, section two, and covers Kant's essay "On the Supposed Right To Lie Based on Philanthropic Concerns". Concepts addressed in this summary include universality, the good will, duty, and the categorical imperative and two of its formulation...
What is the Categorical Imperative? | Immanuel Kant Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Місяць тому
This video goes over what the Kant's categorical imperative is, what it means, and 2 different formulations of it. A categorical imperative (as opposed to a hypothetical imperative) is a commanding rule that must be followed not for some external purpose but because the act itself is good. This is differentiated from something like consequentialist ethics which focuses on the consequences of an...
What is a Good Act? | Immanuel Kant Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Місяць тому
In the first part of the Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, Kant starts by examining the importance of a good will. Virtues such as intelligence or courage can turn evil if the will guiding them is not good. Therefore a good will might be considered to be good in itself without further qualifications. After this, he turns to the concept of duty. To do an action according to duty is to do...
Basic Introduction to Kant’s Moral Philosophy
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 місяці тому
Almost every ethics class in college will go over Immanuel Kant and his moral philosophy. Unfortunately, reading Kant can be quite difficult with his terminology and dense writing. Don't be fooled by the size of the Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, it is packed and every sentence matters. This video explores the preface of the book and Kant's essay "On the Supposed Right to Lie for Phi...
Is Science Always Reliable? | Melendez-Diaz v. Massachusetts
Переглядів 7252 місяці тому
Some philosophers, specifically in the field of epistemology, have critiqued the idea that science should be viewed as completely objective and reliable. However, are their critiques merely theoretical or could they be put into practice? In the case of Melendez-Diaz v. Massachusetts, the U.S. Supreme Court argues that scientific testimony is in fact prone to error or even intentional falsificat...
The Use of Knowledge in Society by F.A. Hayek
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 місяці тому
School might've told us that we can learn anything and everything and truly be masters of knowledge. While it's true that we can learn a lot and use knowledge to make a practical difference in our lives, there are limits to what we can know. In his essay, The Use of Knowledge in Society, the economist and academic F.A. Hayek argues that knowledge will always be dispersed amongst the millions of...
Masterminds and Society | Leonard E Read: I, Pencil
Переглядів 5653 місяці тому
The idea behind intellectual humility is that no matter how much we learn, sometimes we can't fully grasp something as an individual. Therefore, we should be humble and refrain from dogmatism or harsh fighting over differences. The essay I, Pencil by Leonard E. Read describes the extremely complex and complicated situation that leads to the creation of a very simple object, a pencil. We probabl...
5 Essential Tips for Philosophy Students

Philosophy itself can be overwhelming, but when you combine that with an academic setting with grades and exams, it can become discouraging. Understand why you want to study philosophy in college: Is this something you need to study in college or can you learn philosophy through self-directed study? 2. Come up w...

Hackett is the S***! Thier Complete Works of Plato. Ruined me on everything academia, education and university. Why? Because they included a book called "Defenitions" written by the scholars of the actual "Academy." Guess what the defenition to philosophy is? It's not "love of wisdom." "Φιλοσοφία: The state which contemplates the truth. What makes it true. Cultivation of the soul*. Based upon correct resson." That f**** n red pilled me so hard! And it's all Hackett's fault. *P.S. What they meant by soul was The Soul with a capital "S" not your soul. Soul to them was this Roger Penrose notion of a Tripartite reality. That was neither dualist or monoist. In that it was divided 3 ways mental, physical and mathematical. Tripartite.Which is later highlighted in Euclid's treatise on geometry. With the 1st postulate on how construct an equilateral triangle using the points of two circles... 😆.. Roger Penrose's triangle ⟁ anyone? Anyways the two circles in Euclid's 1st postulate represent the "monad" and "dyad" the Equilateral Triangle it constructs is the image of the higher form of Triangle that only exists in the mathematical realm. Which is seen by the mind through the physical sense of sight.

Another thing about Seneca that engenders great respect from me is that he was a philosopher who walked the walk. When Nero’s thugs showed up and told him he had to take his own life he did it without fear or complaint. That’s Stoicism in action.

The real tragedy of Epicurus is that the vast majority of his works have been lost to us over time. All that remains are like the crusts from a loaf of bread. Still even these crusts are delicious. Love me some Epicurus. Great work Amy!

Epicurus was an OS minimalist. In those days the markets, (i.e.Malls) were surrounded by walls. His followers would write slogans above the entrances like, “Nothing you find in here will make you happy!” Imagine seeing something like that scrawled across the front of Wal-Mart or Target! Original Philosophy Gangster.

Prior to this video, I actually wasn't a big fan of the Hacket covers. We had to read some of Plato's Dialogues in a literature class, for example, and I kinda wasn't loving the covers. But now that you point out that some of their covers and solid colors create a vibe with the book/author, I kinda have a growing respect for the minimalism

The idea of god being the unity or singularity before the Big Bang isn’t terribly abstract, many eastern religions describe god as the “oneness” of existence, most specifically Sikhism. It’s proclaimed that the oneness is still present and it’s the ego which separates us from it and as long as where separate, we suffer.

Great job explaining Shestov. To me he was the wests most eastern philosopher :) ... his idea of finding your own philosophy is similar to Osho's comment on everybody should have their own religion. Incredible philosopher.
